2018 - Naomi en Opa Willem - Held op Sokken

Socks with a story – The third edition of the Alzheimer Socks has been designed by Naomi and her grandfather Willem.

Amsterdam/Holten, 21 September 2018 – Today, on World Alzheimer Day, the third edition of the Alzheimer socks has been presented; this initiative helps people gain awareness and make the topic open to everyone.

Differently than in the past years, where famous Dutch fashion designers drew the Alzheimer socks, the third edition has been designed by Alzheimer patient Willem and his niece Naomi. Since a bit more than one year he has been suffering this disease and Naomi feels to lose her grandpa every day a little more. Willem and Naomi participated to the Alzheimer Socks design contest and were asked to tell their story. Naomi was very surprised that Willem chose bright colours instead of grey or black. The socks that they drew can be worn by both ladies and men. The ESP Team and Boomerang Agency made then sure that it would be possible to produce these socks.

Again the slogan ‘held op sokken’, which means ‘hero with sockshas been used to encourage people to buy these socks and become a hero by giving this great contribution to research.

The profit from the sale of the socks will be donated to Alzheimer Nederland and will be used for research on Alzheimer’s disease at the VUmc Alzheimer Centre in Amsterdam.

The Alzheimer socks are being sold online through the web shop https://www.alzheimersocks.nl/, and in stores like Jumbo, Jeans Centre, de Bijenkorf, OGER and coop.

The price of the Alzheimer Socks is € 7,99 per pair. In total almost 80.000 pairs will hopefully be sold in the next weeks. Aim of Alzheimer Socks is to contribute approx. € 630.000 to the Alzheimer Foundation for this edition.
